SS Britannic Castle
A propaganda picture. The painting is a reversal with mother of pearl highlights. On the bottom margin is the following description: SS Britannic Red Cross Hospital Ship Sunk by the Germans without warning. Nov 29th, 1916. 50 Lives lost.
The original frame has been restored with dark velvet and a pair of mirrors. Backing has been covered with a part sea chart.
Small shelf on front for a “T” light.
History: HMHS Britannic was the third, last-built, and largest member of the White Star Line's Olympic class of vessels. She was the sister ship of RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, and was intended to enter service as the transatlantic passenger liner, RMS Britannic. The White Star Line used Britannic as the name of two other ships: SS Britannic (1874), holder of the Blue Riband and MV Britannic (1929), a motor liner, owned by White Star and then Cunard, scrapped in 1960.
Britannic was launched just before the start of the First World War and was laid up at her builders, Harland and Wolff, in Belfast for many months before being put to use as a hospital ship in 1915. She was shaken by an explosion, caused by an underwater mine, in the Kea Channel off the Greek island of Kea on the morning of 21 November 1916, and sank 55 minutes later, killing 30 people.
There were 1,065 people on board; the 1,035 survivors were rescued from the water and lifeboats. Britannic was the largest ship lost in the First World War.

RMS Windsor Castle Porthole Original 14in
RMS Windsor Castle was the largest passenger and cargo liner operated by the Union-Castle Line on its Cape Mail service between Britain and South Africa. Completed in 1960, the new Royal Mail Ship was notable for the high standard, if conservative, design of her public rooms in a "traditional" first class and "contemporary" tourist class configuration, which by clever arrangement, afforded both classes public rooms and open-deck areas facing forward and aft. The spacious passenger lounges and dining rooms were designed by eminent British architects. Windsor Castle was air-conditioned throughout the passenger and crew areas. Facilities included a fully equipped hospital, two outdoor swimming pools, a health spa and a theatre/cinema. A large amount of dry and refrigerated cargo space, cargo wine tanks and a specie (bullion) room, were also fitted.
Restored porthole fitted with original toughened glass and two turnscrews

SS France was a Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT, or French Line) ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire, France, and put into service in February 1962. At the time of her construction in 1960, the 316 m (1,037 ft) vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 345 m (1,132 ft) RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.France was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) in 1979, renamed SS Norway and underwent significant modifications that better suited her for cruising duties. She was sold to be scrapped in 2006, and scrapping was completed in late 2008.

Beneath this are various codes plus the name “Lt Berger” who was to become a legend concerning the remarkable “Dash to Freedom”

This item is on telex paper, the perforated holes are 70mm apart.
I’m afraid there is very little Provinance but I purchased it from a market in South Hams and apparently it was part of a scrap album.
H.M.S. Amethyst was a Devonport ship which was rapturously welcomed by H.M.S. Jamaica another Devonport ship when both drew alongside after the dash in the China Sea with crews from both ships pulling off their caps and shouting “ Oggy, Oggy, ---- Welcome Back Tiddy Oggy” and the ships band played Cruising Down the River on a Sunday Afternoon” and “ See the Conquering Hero Comes”
Also the late Admiral Sir Peter Berger did live in South Hams so in my opinion this is an original item that has like so many interesting items in the antique trade found its way from a deceased estate.
